GSU Panther Express Shuttle Route in OSM

Hi All,

Finally, OSM people updated the GSU Panther Express Route in OpenStreetMap and you can see it like the other routes (color is reddish orange).

 

Press Freedom

Freedom House, a non-profit, nonpartisan organization, is a clear voice for democracy and freedom around the world. They released Freedom of the Press 2008: A Global Survey of Media Independence in advance of World Press Freedom Day on May 3. The survey, released annually since 1980, assess the degree of press freedom in every country in the world. I’m pleased to know that Taiwan is a press freedom country NOW.

suggestions for next Monday’s final meeting grounds

so I think a patio is a great plan and I will just list a few and maybe comments on parking, price, and quality from my own knowledge.

1. Cafe di Sol in the Poncey-Highlands, plenty of parking on the corner of Blue Ridge and N. Highland, great food average around $10, great cocktails and wine selection. it has also been named on the the top Atlanta restaurant Patios.

2. Six Feet Under in Grant Park. Has big rooftop bar, always a plus, food is good, not to expensive, parking can be a problem, but it is also close to the Cabbage Town area that got hit by the hurricane. if that is of any interest to the geo-bloggers.

3. Brewhouse Cafe in Little 5 Points. parking is easy in the neighborhood behind it or the lots just down the street. Food is better than average. good beer list and fairly reasonable. also listed as a top Atlanta patio

4. Universal Joint
in Oakhurst. Nice Patio, don’t think i’ve ever had the food but it looked good, I know they had good beer, not too expensive and generally pretty hip place.

ok so those are my suggestions, there are also a couple of places in the Highlands, like Hand-in-Hand, and Neighbors, Hand-in-Hand is kind of expensive and the food it not the great, but it does have a nice big outdoor beer garden, and I’ve never been to Nieghbor’s but it is right next door.

So i think is is kind of funny that my longest blog entry so far is on what bar/restaurant we should finish out the semester. I am trying to be more webspatial, but it seems I am a slow learner. but I have enjoyed the challenge!

comments about next week’s destination are welcome, if we are truly crowd sourcing, but we might get the word from the top down!

 

If the josm.jar does not open Do This!

If the josm.jar file you downloaded does not open go ahead and create a text file named  start_JOSM.bat in notepad the wite down the following: java -jar josm.jar.   Now save this .bat file in the exact same directory where josm.jar is located.  Next go and double click on the.bat file and JOSM will start up.

Notice I did not put quotes around any commands.  The reason for this is to prevent confusion as in many software manuals a good practice is not put in any punction near verbatum commands to eliminate “polluting” your script.

 

 

Student ‘Twitters’ his way out of Egyptian jail

Buck, a graduate student from the University of California-Berkeley, was in Mahalla, Egypt, covering an anti-government protest when he and his translator, Mohammed Maree, were arrested April 10.

On his way to the police station, Buck took out his cell phone and sent a message to his friends and contacts using the micro-blogging site Twitter.

The message only had one word. “Arrested.”

Within seconds, colleagues in the United States and his blogger-friends in Egypt — the same ones who had taught him the tool only a week earlier — were alerted that he was being held.

Twitter is a social-networking blog site that allows users to send status updates, or “tweets,” from cell phones, instant messaging services and Facebook in less than 140 characters.

Big Box’s

This article is spatial analsysis at its best. The same arose in Toronto one Walmart was introduced. Many of the smaller retailers started to loose business and could no longer support themselves because the people were attracted to Walmart. Walmart is larger then the smaller retailers and offers more convience by providing multiple services in one place

 

I have figured out JOSM and it is great

JOSM (java openstreetmap) is easier to use than I thought. I figured it out last night after class and this am.

I encourage you to download it. There is a way to have a Yahoo image under the map as you edit so you can see where things should go. See example below. I can show people if you would like to know more.

 

Convert GPS Traces to Google Earth

Hey guys,

I found a website that converts .gpx file into the GoogleEarth kml/kmz format. Here is the link. you can see your GPS traces in Google Earth in a second.

 

 

something about Google

so I don’t exactly know what the following is all about but a friend sent this too me, because he knew I was in this class and interested in the topic.  Maybe if anyone does know what its about they will find this interesting. and maybe they could explain it to me!

Google has submitted its keyhole markup language (.kml) to the Open Geospatial Consortium. This is particularly interesting because it will increase the interoperability of mapping software like Google Earth. Now, with the OGC at the helm of .kml, expect to see a lot more true custom scripting and programming associated with Google Earth. Here’s some pretty neat custom tools (GEtools) already developed for the new Google Earth 4.3.
